What are the most common misconceptions in the jewelry business?

The first that comes to mind is why there are holes under gems and Diamonds.

Many people think the holes are needed because Diamonds have to breathe,
or that diamonds need for light to get to them, or that it prevents them from breaking.

The real reason for holes to be under gems and Diamonds
is so that they can be properly cleaned.

We have heard that watchmakers have stolen the jewels out of people’s watches.
The truth is Jewels in watches are really bushings that are made from Ruby
and the real cost is the labor to replace one.

Now for one of the most difficult misconceptions.

Over the years we have heard customers say that they had a diamond switched,
or knew of a friend who had one switched for lower quality.

I won’t be so bold as to think that no one has ever cheated someone by switching their stone,
but I must say that in most cases what happened is that when the purchase was made.

High quality was implied by the merchant with velvet boxes, salespeople in suits and ties,
expensive displays, advertisements and overall appearance of store

Then comes the repairs needed on the jewelry.

Next the jewelry owner has a need for an appraisal for insurance.
At the time of the appraisal the customer discovers that they have a lower grade diamond
upon which they think the jeweler who repaired their ring switched their diamond.

The most important thing in today’s jewelry market place is to look at your diamond
through a 10X instrument and know its quality when you make your purchase.
