January
Garnet

The name Garnet comes from the Latin word Granatus,
which means “seed like” or “having many seeds”
due to a garnet crystal’s resemblance to pomegranate seeds.
The color of red gems suggested blood to
primitive cultures,
and red garnets were thought to stop bleeding and cure inflammation.
They were believed to have the powers to
sooth discord between enemies and to prevent bloodshed.
Garnet is considered the gem of faith, constancy and truth.
It occurs in every color of the spectrum,
except blue,
and each of these colors are permissible to wear for the January birthstone.
There are many varieties of Garnet and we are going to list the ones that we have in stock.
Pyrope Garnet (red with brown tint)
is from the Greek word Fiery
and was the fashion stone of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Deposits are found in Burma, China, Madagascar, Tanzania and United States.
Pyrope is the most common and least expensive of the gem quality garnets.
Almandite Garnet (red with violet
tint) got its name from a small town in Asia Minor.
Deposits are found the same as above and also in the Czech Republic and Austria.
Rhodolite Garnet is a combination of
Pyrope and Almandite
and is sought after for its bright raspberry color.
These stones are extraordinary in their beauty and are not to expensive.
Spessartite Garnet’s name is derived
from its occurrence in the Spessart forest in Germany.
These Garnets are light orange to an intense red orange with a brownish tint.
Other deposits are found in Burma, Brazil China, Madagascar, Tanzania and the
United States.
The best specimens come from Namibia.
Tsavorite (sav-or-rite) Garnet is a
green to emerald green variety
and has recently started to become in demand.
It was just recently discovered in the early 1970’s and to some people
is more beautiful than the finest Emeralds.
These stones are the most expensive Garnets we stock
and range from $600 to $1100 per carat.
To date, there are no known enhancements for garnet.
What comes from the miner winds up cut and in our store with no artificial treatment.
Randy’s jewelry has a broad selection of Garnet and just recently stocked Spessartite.
We also have uncut specimens of Garnet for you to enjoy.
