March
Aquamarine

Aquamarine is the blue to greenish blue variety of beryl.
The name is derived from a Latin word meaning “sea water”.
Dark blue that is inclusion free is the most sought after.
Santa Maria is the trade term for especially fine Aquamarine,
named after the mine in Ceara Brazil.
The people of the middle ages believed aquamarine had magical powers
that would give them insight, foresight and the ability to conquer wickedness.
It was also used as a cure for eye troubles, respiratory diseases and hiccups.
Found primarily in Brazil, aquamarine is also mined in
Russia, Burma, China, Madagascar and Africa.
Aquamarine is commonly heated to eliminate green undertones.
The typical size of aquamarine is a wide range from small to large,
and stones are commonly seen in 10-30 carat sizes.
The largest Aquamarine of gemstone quality was found
in 1910 Marambaya, Minas Gerais (Brazil).
It weighed 243 pounds and was 18inch long and 151/2 inch in diameter.
This enormous crystal was cut into many gems that weighed over 100,000 carats.
Aquamarine is the birthstone for March and is designated for the 18th wedding
anniversary.
